Hey VentureTaler - It’s Alex!

Welcome back! Today we are diving into our 22nd VentureTale. This one will make you re-think what you put on your face everyday! But don’t worry, we’ll keep it short and sweet as always.

In today’s agenda..

  • The Danish startup that eliminated microplastics from your skincare routine!

  • All you need to know about global AI news!

  • Photo of the Week: London is the startup capital of Europe!

If you missed our previous Tales, here are some to check out:

You know what's crazy? We live in a world where you can order organic, gluten-free, sustainably-sourced everything, yet we're all casually munching on the equivalent of a credit card every week. Not metaphorically - literally! Humans now consume about 5 grams of plastic weekly and apparently nobody talks about this because it might kill the mood. 💳

The Industry

The scale of our plastic obsession has reached cartoonish levels. We produced 413.8 million metric tons of plastic in 2023 alone – that's a 230x increase since 1950. At this rate, aliens studying Earth in 2055 will conclude that plastic was our primary food source. 👽️

But here's where the story gets properly nuts. While we're all worried about what's in our food, we're slathering microplastics all over our faces every morning without a second thought. The European cosmetics market hit €96 billion in 2023 and research shows that 87-90% of products from major brands like L'Oréal, Nivea and Gillette contain microplastics. Only 13% were found to be microplastic-free. So basically, finding clean cosmetics is like finding parking in downtown Rome; technically possible, but good luck! 🎭

The numbers are massive: 14 million tons of plastic enter our oceans annually. That's equivalent to five blue whales per hour just..diving into the sea. Except they're made of bottle caps, shopping bags and shampoo packaging. 🐳
